The Maverick 2020
James Halliday | 96 points
A wine that shines a light on the best fruit from the Barossa and Eden valleys. Elegant and fruit-pure with an ironstone and iodine-like sheen to the deep blackberry and black cherry fruits. Layers of baking spices, roasting meats, blood pudding, dark chocolate and impressively judged oak along with compact granitic tannins and bright acidity with excellent length on the finish. Another very impressive release.

Ahrens’ Creek Ancestor Vine Shiraz 2020
James Halliday | 96 points
The vines were planted by then newly arrived migrant Mick Ahrens, and, as old vines can do, sailed through the at times challenging vintage. This is a beautiful shiraz, medium bodied with its deep river of dark chocolate, blackberry fruit, filagreed tannins and positive oak.

Ahrens’ Creek Shiraz 2020

Very old (ancestor) vines have produced a savoury, earthy wine that’s very different to its Ahrens’ Creek Ancestor Vine Shiraz sibling. There’s a hint of bitter chocolate that comes and goes in a wine full of interest.

“Tempus fugat” usually denotes the all too swift passage of time. But in this painting Charles has metamorphosed time into a joyous voyage of exploration. So too with Maverick’s old vine Cabernet Sauvignon, which will can be cherished now, or nurtured in the hedonist’s cellar to become even more vibrantly enjoyable with the passage of the years. The sandy soils of Vine Vale in the heart of the Barossa give the perfect expression of Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine titillates the palate with beautiful bright cassis flavours.

Charles’ painting symbolises a re-birth of Venus in an age of luxury super cars, a classic marriage of modern and ancient beauty. So too the old Shiraz vines from this, one of the earliest blocks to be planted in the Barossa Valley, have given birth to a beautiful and youthful expression of this noble variety. Like the goddess herself, a wonderful balance of clear bright vivacity and elegance, with lovely notes of red currents, plums and rose hips.

This surrealist rendering of the Tower of Babel symbolises the diversity of languages, cultures and peoples which co-exist in our tiny crowded planet. Yet one word which is in every hedonist’s vocabulary and transcends every tongue is “Cabernets”. This wine is a brilliant montage of the internationally-renowned noble varieties of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It unites wine lovers from across the globe in its perfect harmony of sunshine, elegance and structure, with flavours of blueberry , black currant and peppermint.
Maverick Ahrens’ Creek Barossa Valley Mourvedre 2019
James Halliday | 94 points
Camp Eye perfectly captures the mood of this lovely young lady who finds herself unaccountably and undeservedly on her own after the rest of the world has boringly gone home. However, this is more than compensated for by the wine in her glass and in this bottle. Mourvedre is another of the still under-appreciated beauties in this world – a noble variety which is waiting to be discovered and appreciated on its own merits. This deep purple red wine combines dark red fruits, plums, greengages on a layer of vanilla with a spicy nutmeg lift. It is just by itself the perfect companion.
